Hello from the other side

Hello, friends.

This is going to be a short message today, but it's an exciting one: The Action Cookbook Newsletter is now hosted through Ghost!

I already knew that.

That's great! That means you follow me on social media, which I appreciate, even if I can't necessarily recommend it.

Wait, I didn't know that!

That's okay! You don't have to do anything. All existing memberships have been transferred over on my end. Your renewal dates, membership and payment details are the same as they were before. The biggest difference is that the emails are going to be coming from a slightly different address, and in a slightly different typeface.

(Also, if you previously read through the Substack app, that's no longer an option.)

What's the reasoning for all of this?

There's a lot of reasons, and I won't bore you with too much explanation. Suffice it to say, though, I have substantive disagreements with the owners of Substack regarding their embrace and promotion of extremist and hate speech outlets.

At the same time, there are a good many writers who I like and respect who are publishing through that platform, and I don't want to paint them with the same brush. It's complicated!

I want a snack.

Go ask your mother, I'm typing a newsletter right now.

She said to ask you.

Fine, go get something from the pantry.

Are your archives still accessible?

Yes! The team at Ghost was incredibly helpful in porting over my full content archive, and I'm pleased to see that internal links have largely re-pathed, too. I don't yet have dedicated pages for Recipes and Cocktails and such like I did before, but the internal search feature here appears to be more robust and useful than it was on the old site.

It goes on like that. There were something like 850 posts at the old place, and they're all here now!

What about comments?

This was the big loss in the move, and one that I agonized over. Reader comments are the lifeblood of this place, and while I hope that continues with the new comment system, comments on old posts could not be brought over.

(Of course, that means I get to ask some of my favorite questions again.)

Is anything else changing? I don't like change.

I don't either, and please trust that this is going to be the same Action Cookbook Newsletter than you know and (hopefully) love. I'm still going to write about weird food and parenting stuff and sports. I'm still going to work in short fiction from time to time, and I'm still going to send the occasional post that makes you wonder what the heck is wrong with me. Friday Newsletters are still going to be the backbone of the ACBN, with food, drink, music, books, pets and more.

It's just coming from a better place.

Can I have another snack?
